How long have you served at Front Street UMC?
I began serving the Front Street UMC and the Burlington community in July of 2015. It’s a happy marriage.

What’s your favorite thing about working here?
The freedom to pursue God’s vision with such capable and wonderfully gifted disciples of Jesus. Also the staff. They’re my people!

What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you here?
I don’t know about funny things happening to me, as I’m usually the trickster. Earlier this year while Dave (our Youth Minister) was on mission with the youth group, I gathered all the cups I could find in the church building into his office with a large basin of water in reference to one of the final scenes from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, along with a picture of the ancient knight who asked Indy to choose wisely which cup is the Holy Grail.

Where were you born and raised?
I was born in Wilmington, NC, which if you don’t know, is considered the greatest city in human history. I was raised primarily in Elizabethtown, which is NOT Elizabeth City, dear friends. E-town is near White Lake, or down east as we say.

Where did you go to school?
East Bladen High School – 2005
Methodist University – 2009 – B.S. in Psychology and Religion
Duke University – 2012 – Master of Divinity

How many children do you have?
None currently. Brittany and I look forward to being proud parents one day.

Any pets?
Gracie, our adorable, intelligent, and rambunctious golden doodle.

What is most important about your work at FSUMC? What drives you? What is your passion?
Following the lead of the Holy Spirit is the single most important part of being a pastoral leader. God leads us down paths we never thought we’d take, and challenges us to be more of who God created us to be. Helping folks to enter that relationship and live it daily gives me the most joy. Particularly, I give energy and attention to worship and the arts that go into making worship a fitting response to the living God’s work in our lives, as well as participation in God’s mission however God calls us to do that. Being in the neighborhood, practicing hospitality, extending mercy, and taking that to the places and people God calls us around the world keeps me both humble and driven in ministry.

What two people have most influenced you?
For sure my mother. I am who I am because of her strong love and influence. Even though she’s no longer with us I continue to see the fruit of her parenting and wisdom in the decisions I make as an adult with my family.
Also, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Of all the wonderfully faithful and courageous people of faith I’ve studied and looked to for wisdom on this journey, he stands out as a person who was particularly gifted by God with bravery, intelligence, and discernment to live the way of Jesus faithfully in Germany during the 1930s and 40s before he was executed.

What are your favorite books, movies or songs?
Books: The Lord of the Rings (Tolkien), The Cost of Discipleship (Bonhoeffer), In the Name of Jesus (Nouwen), Go Set A Watchman (Lee), Crime & Punishment (Dostoyevsky), Gilead (Robinson)
Movies: Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, Rocky, Downfall, Home Alone, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Halloween, IT, Dunkirk.
Songs: There are too many to list, but believe it or not, I am a metal head. I LOVE heavy metal. It’s what I was raised on, in addition to blues, classic rock, and folk music.

How do you like to spend your free time?
I’m an introvert, so that will help you to understand how I spend my free time. I’ve been playing guitar for about 15 years, so there’s that. I love to jam, and to rock out with other musician friends. I’m also a voracious reader. Cooking is also a therapeutic exercise for me, especially when that translates into a meal shared among friends. Most of all I enjoy being with my wife, close friends, and my dog.

If you weren’t a minister at FSUMC what would your profession be?
No brainer. A voice actor or radio personality.

What’s your favorite food?
It’s hard to settle on a single dish, so I’ll be a bit more general. I love spicy foods, anything that makes me sweat, so think Mexican, Thai, or Indian cuisine.

Where do you like to vacation?
I need water in my life, most especially the ocean as I grew up near it. I get a little twitchy living so far away from it now. Brittany and I love the beach, and NC has plenty of awesome ones, though we also like the Caribbean. We’re fans of the mountains too, don’t get me wrong, but the coast is where it’s at. We also love to explore historical sites and areas while we relax.
