Stephen Ministers: The After People

         People often ask, “What is a Stephen Minister?”  One way to answer it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People.  Stephen Ministers are there:

    ...after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.

    ...after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve kept bottled up come pouring out.

    ...after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”

    ...after the gavel comes down and your loved one is led away.

    ...after the baby comes demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible.

    ...after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.

    ...after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away, and the house suddenly seems empty.

The list is endless.

Stephen Ministers are ready to come alongside you to provide comfort and support when you need it most.  Stephen Ministers exemplify the love our heavenly Father shows for us and calls us to show for one another.

As many of you are aware, we started our Stephen Ministry here at Front Street back in 2003 – 14 years ago.   Over the years our program became inactive due to a lack of participation by our church family.  The good news is this trend seems to be changing!

Since it has been 14 years since I was trained as a Stephen Leader, I will be going to a Leadership Training Class in April in St. Louis along with Don Milligan who will be working with Ray and me to revive our dormant Stephen Ministry.  Ray was trained as a Stephen Leader about 5 years ago and is very familiar with how the program works.

For a Stephen Ministry program to be successful here at Front Street UMC it is essential that we know what Stephen Ministry is; understand how it works; and most importantly, hear God’s call to:

  • serve as Stephen Ministers;
  • receive a Stephen Minister when it is offered; and
  • recommend Stephen Ministry to others who need care.

We ask you to pray for us as we work to build a Stephen Ministry team here at Front St.  Specifically, for discernment as our program begins to unfold.  We will be sharing more about Stephen Ministry in the coming weeks and months so that we can build the strong foundation that is essential for an effective Stephen Ministry program.
