I commit you to God…

Read Romans 16:25-27 (KJV)

The apostle Paul brings his letter to the Christian communities of Rome to a close with a person touch.  In the verses leading up to this particular reading (16:25-27), Paul names the sisters and brothers who have made not only this letter possible, but also God’s mission on Caesar’s world. He concludes, in fact, with a series of specific salutations as a way of marking their deep connection in Christ despite the miles of distance and challenging circumstances that separate them.  He salutes persons that he has worked with, been in prison with, and also those who have literally saved his life as he journeyed to bring the good news of Jesus to Gentile peoples.

During Advent we are reminded that Jesus became flesh and lived among us, that he is Immanuel, which means “God with us”. Our journey, the same journey Paul took, is not one we must do alone, but is one we get to do by the grace of God with companions who love us and encourage us as we grow.

In this season of expectation and hope, let us remember we don’t walk this path alone.  Let us commit ourselves to God again because God is with us, most fully in Jesus, but also in our sisters and brothers—our fellow laborers in this good work.  Let us rejoice with the benediction of this letter....May the glory be to God who can strengthen you with my good news and the message that I preach about Jesus Christ….May the glory be to God, who alone is wise! May the glory be to him through Jesus Christ forever!”

Prayer:  Oh gracious and heavenly father, we ask you for strength to be better stewards of your resources and stronger ambassadors of your word and will: together.  Amen.
