John the Witness

Read John 1:6-8, 19-28

Today’s scripture commences by telling us who John is not.  When faced with interrogation, John states he is a messenger and witness of God, not the Messiah or a prophet.  John does not stray from his directive—God sent him to baptize with water and proclaim Jesus as light. He shows others the ‘straight path’ to salvation.  This exchange is both a testament to John’s fame as well as his resolute discipleship.

John serves God with obedience and humility.  When the light of interrogation shines on him, John chooses not to glorify himself, to bend or to back down. He remains courageous and bold. John curbs rumors that he is the Messiah by placing more emphasis on being John the Witness instead of John the Baptist.  When asked why he baptizes, John says he only uses water and is unworthy to tie the sandals of the One who comes after him.

What is your God given identity/purpose?  Would you stand like John the Witness with unfaltering conviction, setting aside insecurities and self-doubts if your calling is questioned?  Can you lead someone wandering through a personal wilderness to the path of righteousness?

John is a witness whose identity aligns with God in both word and deed.  Our purpose as disciples is not to shine light on ourselves and our good deeds, but to magnify God and our Godly purpose.

While winter brings shorter, darker days, it also encompasses a time when we celebrate the coming birth of the Light of the World.  Advent is a season of preparation and reflection, making it a good time to examine where you are in your walk with Christ.  How will you let your light shine and be a witness to help others come to know Jesus as the Way, the Truth and the Light?

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for shining light in the darkness of the world. Help us to be like John, bold, courageous witnesses in both our words and deeds. Amen.
