On Their Hearts

Read Jeremiah 31:31-34

One could make the case that the Bible is the story of God pursuing people who have been running from Him and ruining their lives in the process.  Beginning with Adam and Eve, the Bible is full of people who knew the right choice to make, the choice that God was asking them to make, and made the wrong one anyway.  And what is God’s response?  He forgives us over and over, and continues to pursue us because He loves us so much.

The Israelites are a perfect example of this.  God laid down his expectations through His laws.  The people follow the laws for a while, and then become discouraged, start living in their own ways and suffer the consequences of their choices.  God rebukes them, reminds them of their covenant, forgives them and calls them back into relationship with Him.

This passage refers to the new covenant which God would make between the Israelites and Himself.  What is new about this covenant is not so much its content, but the means by which God will bring it about.  Instead of His law being written on stone or scrolls, which can be broken or hidden away, it will be written on “their minds’ and “their hearts’.  There is something so intimate about this analogy - that God would come close enough to each of us to touch our hearts and minds.

The basis of this new covenant is God’s forgiveness and mercy.  Everyone will know God, no matter their class or status.  Never again will they wonder whether God remembers their sin: “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

How encouraging it is for us to know that God is faithful, even when we are not, and he forgives us, no matter what we have done.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you that you pursue us relentlessly and forgive us repeatedly.  Help us to look for opportunities this Advent season to share the good news of your love and forgiveness with others.   Amen.
