‘Tis the Gift to be Simple

Read 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 (MSG)

This passage brings the song “Tis the Gift to be Simple” to life for me.  In this time of gift-giving, this is a wonderful reminder of not just why we give gifts but what a gift is.

There are so many things we refer to as “gifts.”  We give gifts at celebrations, birthdays, and now at Christmas.  We have gifts, like the ability to sing, speak, play instruments, teach, etc.  We gift our tithes to the church.  We speak of good things in our lives as “gifts” from God, such as our children.  But most importantly, we are given the gift of life through Christ.  He died so we can live, knowing He is with us always and is our partner in life.  Each day that we are able to serve Him is the greatest gift we are given.

As my best friend endures aggressive cancer treatments for a second time, this passage has taken on more meaning.  We must remember to stop and rejoice over the gifts God places in our lives: our families, our friends, our church.  It’s not the things that will be under the tree this year, no matter how special or thoughtful or meaningful.  It is the gift of love we are able to give to the people in our lives that matters most.

We have love in our lives because of the love Christ first gave to us.  Take a moment during this busy season and praise Him for the wonderful, simple gifts we have been given and in the love we share with the people in our lives.  These simple and special gifts are the outward sign of God at work in our lives.

Prayer: Hey, God!  Thank you for all the gifts you give us each and every day.  We especially thank you for the gift of your son, Jesus.  Your love and the love of Jesus are the perfect examples of the love we can show others.  Help us to cherish our family and friends this Advent season and remind them how much we love them.  The greatest gift we have to give and receive is love.  Amen.
