When in Doubt, Keep on Believing

Read Matthew 11:2-11

As I have pondered this chosen scripture, I realized even the prophet, John the Baptist, had doubts about Jesus being the true Messiah.  John was in prison in this passage so he sent his disciples to observe Jesus and to report back to him. They told John that Jesus was healing the lame, restoring sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, cleansing to the lepers, raising the dead, and proclaiming the good news.  This was everything that had been prophesied about the Messiah in the book of Isaiah. (Isaiah 35:5-6 & Isaiah 61:1)  John’s doubts seemed to be more about him and how his purposes for preparing hearts for the coming Messiah had been thwarted.  Jesus understood John’s doubts but with ALL the evidence the disciples presented His identity was obvious.

This passage gives me great comfort to know even John the Baptist had doubts.  He also had questions about God’s purposes for his own life, AND if he had fulfilled them in preparing the way for the Messiah.  God is able to handle our doubts, questions, and fears when we seek forgiveness and are totally honest with him.  Seeking God’s truth, His desires and purposes for our lives, also requires a hunger for His word and spending time in prayer.  God used John to announce the coming of our Lord Jesus.  He wants to use us also, but we must believe BIG!   God has given us the ultimate proof that He is who He says He is---Our RISEN Savior!  What more can we need?

Prayer: Loving and Risen Savior, Help us live as true believers of Christ with boldness to face the doubts that arise.  Strengthen us to be used for your service and give us your perfect peace.   In the name of Jesus our Lord.  Amen.
