Update on Our Sister Church in Sochi, Russia

There is a great need in Sochi for churches to preach the gospel, bringing people to Christ and nourishing the spiritual growth of believers. In spite of a rich Christian heritage, Russia is full of bizarre sects and misinformation following the spiritual barrenness of Communism.

Pastor Alexandr Pererva has a great love of Christ, and a heart for ministering to those who are seeking God. He has built a congregation from nothing and is not only nurturing them in the Word, but is leading them in outreach and ministry to two different groups of handicapped people.

Alexandr’s wife Galina has also studied at the Methodist Seminary in Moscow and is certified as a Lay Leader.  Together they are following the Methodist tradition, bringing Christ to the people of Sochi.

But the church they have started has reached its size limit.  Because they usually meet in Alexandr and Galina's apartment, they cannot accommodate a larger congregation.

Transfiguration Church will not survive, much less have a chance to become self-supporting, without a building in which to meet.

Front Street has begun a campaign to raise enough money to purchase a lot as the first step toward constructing a suitable church building to house Transfiguration Church.

We are in communication with Pastor Alexandr and with others in Russia to find the best value possible in a potential church and parsonage building.

Our donations will go through the General Board of Global Ministries of the UMC to a fund administered by them for the Russian United Methodist Church.  All of the funds designated for a building in Sochi or its renovation would be used for that purpose and no other.  The building would belong to the RUMC, just as church property does in this country, and they would handle the purchase.

If you have ideas as to raising funds for Sochi and/or are willing to work toward overcoming the daunting financial challenge, PLEASE contact Gail or John Harwood, the coordinators for this Missions project.
If you wish to contribute to this project, designating your gift for "Sochi building" will ensure that it will be used for that purpose.

Whether or not you support his church financially, Alexandr has asked for your prayers to support the work of Christ in Sochi.
