The History of Front Street UMC

Our Story

When the North Carolina Railroad built shops on the six hundred acres provided by Gen. Benjamin Trollinger, families began to settle in and create what is now Burlington. In 1867, a Union Church was constructed about a block from our present site, and in 1887, George W. and Mary Holt Anthony were moved to purchase two lots from the Railroad for a Methodist Church. The cornerstone for our first Methodist Episcopal Church South was laid in May 1888 and the church was completed on July 17th, 1891. Since then, the congregation of Front Street has been in three buildings, the present one constructed beginning in 1950.

Our history tells a story of faith amidst celebrations of growth, and suffering loss. Through all these years Front Street United Methodist Church has been committed to God sized hope and love for all people. That hope is still a part of our culture today.

Our Purpose

Knowing Christ

We seek to be attentive to the life of Christ Jesus as a model for how we are supposed to live and act in this world, especially in our treatment of others. We pay attention to the ways Christ is moving in our lives so that we find personal spiritual connections and experiential moments.

Growing in Christ

We strive to grow our relationship with Christ as we engage in worship of God and a shared life together. We look for ways to grow our knowledge of scripture, our participation in tradition, and our ministry with reason so that others will experience God more easily through our lives.

Share Christ

We long to share stories of how Christ has and is working in our lives. We are learning more and more that the abundance of blessings from Christ is too much to keep to ourselves. We hope and pray others will come to Know Christ for themselves, not because of our stories but because our stories gave them room to experience Christ in their own stories.
